Menopause Acne: How to Clear Up Your Skin Once and For All

Menopause acne is a condition that may remind you of teen flare-ups. And it’s no wonder since both are caused by hormonal imbalances. Of course, there’s no woman in her forties, fifties and beyond who wants to have to deal with pimples. When combined with other common menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweating, hair loss, mood swings and vaginal dryness, having zits may seem like the proverbial feather that broke the camel’s back. It worsens your negative feelings about menopause especially since your self-esteem and image are involved.

Vanity-related reasons aside, a woman experiencing menopause acne may feel as if her body is betraying her. Skin break-outs are supposed to be things of the past, left behind along with all the drama of high school. Progesterone and estrogen levels fluctuate during menopause, stimulating excessive sebum production and triggering flare-ups. Fortunately, there are a number of effective ways to treat menopausal acne, and they are not hard to do.

Exercise, proper diet, and natural supplements can help you keep menopause acne at bay

  • Drink plenty of water. That old advice about drinking at least eight glasses of water a day works well in dealing with menopause acne. Drinking plenty of water hydrates the skin and flushes out toxins that can contribute to the formation of pimples. It’s also a good idea to make green tea a regular beverage because of its antioxidant properties.While you’re at it, cut down on your liquor intake as well. Shop for fresh foodstuff that is high in Vitamin C and beta-carotene like carrots, oranges, tomatoes, and grapefruit. To get more Vitamin A (it improves cell and tissue regeneration and paves the way for healthier skin, nails, and hair), eat adequate amounts of Omega 3-rich tuna, cooked liver, yogurt and fortified milk.Eating fat and unhealthy oils increases sebum production and can encourage menopause acne. Add to that the unpredictable hormone levels during menopause that cause estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone to rise and fall, and you’ve got a recipe for break-outs. A low-fat, high-fiber diet is a great way to have clearer skin and promote overall good health.
  • Exercise regularly. This works two ways. First, exercising opens up the pores when you sweat, so there’s lesser chance of bacteria and oil forming blackheads beneath your skin. Secondly, your heart and lungs benefit from cardio exercise. It encourages healthier blood flow and in turn helps your skin glow naturally.Another great form of exercise for menopausal women is yoga. Yoga encourages meditation to relieve the body and mind of stress (another huge culprit of menopause acne) and also helps you adjust to hormonal changes without unnecessary bodily strain.

  • Go for natural skin regimen supplements.
