Female Menopause Symptom of Weight-Gain Reduced by Eating Protein

by Laura Ramirez on August 12, 2011

The female menopause symptom of weight gain is particularly troubling to women who are also suffering from other symptoms such as mood swings, depression, insomnia and fatigue. How are you supposed to lose weight when you don’t have any energy, aren’t getting much sleep (due to hot flashes and night sweats) and your outlook on life is well, rather grim?

Probably the first, most important ingredient to successful weight loss is a positive attitude which is impossible to garner when you feel like your world is falling apart. A new study published by the University of Illinois gives mature women hope because it shows that eating a high protein diet helps women maintain shapely muscle while losing fat. This is great news since it means that the ability to make this one simple choice can greatly impact women’s chances for successful weight loss.

Post-menopausal women who are trying to lose weight should try to consume protein to maintain their muscles and physical function, a new US study suggests.

Researchers from the University of Illinois have found that dieters who add plenty of protein to their diet will find it not only keeps hunger at bay, meaning people lose more weight, but it also keeps the ratio of fat to muscle in better proportion.

Post-menopausal women who consume a high-protein weight-loss diet will find it is more protective of their muscle, explained Ellen Evans, a former associate professor of kinesiology and community health at the university and member of the Division of Nutritional Sciences.

Female menopause symptom: weight gain can be reversed by eating more protein.

Eating protein is important to health especially during weight loss. What often happens when a woman loses a lot of weight is that a good percentage of that weight loss is muscle which effects balance, strength and the overall appearance of her body. Keeping your weight within the healthy range is important because women who are overweight have a greater chance of developing breast cancer.

Since another recent study showed that soy does not protect women from bone loss, it is important to add weight bearing exercise to your daily routine as well as fueling those shapely muscles with a high protein diet. Concentrate on eating lean protein, fish, legumes and nuts along with lots of fresh vegetables. A good choice for lunch or dinner is a colorful salad topped with grilled chicken or fish and drizzled with a balsamic vinagrette.
