Beginning Menopause Symptoms – Can They Be Relieved by Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

by Laura Ramirez on August 15, 2011

Beginning menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, chills, mood swings, weight gain, heart palpitations and depression can be frustrating and even a bit frightening, but they are nothing compared to the potential long term effects of living with hormonal imbalances. People underestimate the importance of hormonal balance to promote immune system function, positive moods, and healthy functioning of the heart, brain, nervous system, bone structure and every cell in the body.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (bHRT) seeks to do more than just replace hormones. The goal is to balance hormones to their proper levels by using plant-based substances rather than synthetic drugs.

Recently popularized by celebrities such as Suzanne Somers and Oprah Winfrey, bHRT has promoted almost as an elixir of youth. When we’re talking about balancing hormones, we’re talking about a whole slew of them: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, cortisol and pregnenolone. These hormones exist in varying levels in both women and men. Since supplementing one hormone can affect the others, the key is balance and periodic testing. This can be a complex process, but once hormones are in balance, many men and women report that they feel like themselves again. Still, some doctors don’t agree with hormone replacement therapy, whether it’s natural or not.

Below is a video along with some key differences between bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and synthetic hormone replacement therapy:

What is the difference between bio-identical and synthetic hormones?

Synthetic hormones are manufactured in laboratories, for mass consumption, in other words, one-pill-fits-all. Because they are synthetic and not natural, they can produce unwanted side effects like nausea, fluid retention, and dizziness. And there are also potential dangers like the increased risk of breast or uterine cancer.

Bioidentical hormones, contrary to synthetic hormones, are extracted from natural sources, plants like soybean and wild yams, and their molecular structure is identical to that of the hormones produced by our bodies. They can also be compounded (made into cream) to suit your specific hormone replacements needs, allowing you to receive individualized hormone treatment.

Some advantages of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy are; improved look and feel of hair and skin, weight loss, improved sex drive, improved mental health, lower cholesterol levels, decreased risk of osteoporosis, decreased risk of heart attack and stroke and so much more!ᅠWatch the video about one BHRT clinic and how they approach treatment of hormonal imbalances.…/bio_identical_hormones_lansing_mi_ea…

Of course balancing hormones is not the only key to your hormonal health. It’s amazing what a big effect nutrition has on your hormone levels. Eating a balanced diet that gives your body lots of healing phytonutrients is key. Getting proper rest (at least 7 hours per night) along with regular exercise and stress management is also essential to your health. As with anything, mere supplementation is not enough … you have to make those important lifestyle changes that nurture and support your body, mind and spirit. At, we recommend yoga and meditation in addition to lots of water, rest, good food and downtime.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can relieve beginning menopause symptoms and if you start early enough during menopause, your symptoms may be minimal. As always before proceeding with any menopause treatments, consult your doctor.
