34 Menopause Symptoms

by Laura Ramirez on August 13, 2011

There are 34 menopause symptoms that are widely considered the most common complaints among women in their mid to late forties. They affect around seventy percent of females at the onset of peri-menopause, and they can last for the entire duration of menopause. For some women, this pretty much means the rest of their lives, although the severity and frequency of the symptoms can change at any time. Learn more about the top eleven of these symptoms and what to expect from each one.

  1. Hot flashes

Hot flashes are no doubt the most common of all the 34 menopause symptoms, affecting as much as eighty-five percent of menopausal American females. It characteristically begins as a sudden sensation of warmth beginning from the face, and then creeping down the neck, chest, and upper body. This is the result of declining hormone levels, and is likely to decrease over time. Some women suffer from hot flashes for as long as 7-10 years so it is important to seek treatment for this symptom. (See the end of this article for treatment suggestions.)

  1. Night sweats

Some women experience nocturnal hot flashes as part and parcel of the 34 menopause symptoms. It is also known as night sweating, and is considered a more intense version of the typical hot flash mainly for the accompanying inconveniences it causes, such as insomnia and restlessness during bedtime.

  1. Irregular periods

Peri-menopause is punctuated by irregular periods; either short or long ones, or heavier than usual bleeding. Spotting in-between periods is also one of the menopause symptoms commonly experienced by women. Hormonal imbalance is the common culprit for irregular periods, although there can be other medical causes for it.

  1. Decreased libido

The loss of libido is not a widely addressed issue, though it definitely earns a place in the most common 34 menopause symptoms list. It is also caused by hormonal imbalance brought on by menopause, and has become the source of many marital woes as far as sexual intimacy between spouses is concerned.

  1. Vaginal dryness

The decline of estrogen levels directly contributes to vaginal tissues drying up and becoming less elastic. Vaginal atrophy and dryness is near the top of the list because of the embarrassment and intimacy issues they can cause. You can alleviate vaginal dryness with an herbal lube made especially for this purpose.

Although not entirely in the jurisdiction of menopause, mood swings are one of the most common among the 34 menopause symptoms because they can affect women in profound ways. Sufferers complain about suddenly bursting into tears for no apparent reason, or uncontrollable rages at the slightest provocation. The good news is that there are safe and effective ways to address mood swings and many women have found that instead of drugs, herbal remedies work effectively to balance mood.

  1. Fatigue

Harvard Medical School studies reveal that fatigue can affect one-fourth of all Americans in their lifetimes. It is also one of 34 menopause symptoms needing to be remedied because fluctuating and declining hormone levels can sap women of energy. Chronic fatigue can affect a  woman’s quality of life and relationships. It can make it virtually impossible for her to fulfill her role as caretaker of husband, children and aging parents.

  1. Hair loss or thinning hair

Estrogen deficiency is behind a woman’s hair loss because follicles rely on estrogen for strength. Other medical conditions can also cause hair loss, although thinning hair along with a couple more of the 34 menopause symptoms ordinarily attributed to fluctuating hormone levels can signal sure entry into menopause

  1. Sleep disorders

Hot flashes and night sweating can significantly contribute to insomnia and difficulty sleeping at night. However, most of the commonly experienced 34 menopause symptoms are independent of menopause-related sleep disorders. The quality of sleep is also affected by hormonal decline and of aging in general.

  1. Difficulty in concentrating

As with sleep disorders, women can experience difficulty in concentrating as dictated by the aging process. Serious medical conditions need to be ruled out before this particular symptom can be attributed to menopause. As part of the list of 34 menopause symptoms that adversely affect women, it needs to be investigated and then remedied.

  1. Noticeable lapses of memory

Forgetting where you placed your glasses, car keys, or missing appointments can become common occurrences as you enter middle age. However, noticeable lapses of memory are considered one of the 34 menopause symptoms that cause many women trouble and embarrassment. There are natural remedies for menopause that are safer to take than synthetic ones and specifically formulated to treat certain symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and more. In addition to herbal solutions, you can also use a supplemental estrogen cream like Source Naturals Phyto-Estrogen Cream, 4 oz to help relieve symptoms since many of them are caused by low estrogen. As always, make sure to have a hormone saliva test, familiarize yourself with the results and what they mean and consult with your doctor. There are also patches, pills, gels and troches as other options.
